Neal R. Aton

Neal Aton is an executive leader with 35 years of experience leading insurance and financial services enterprises. He is currently chairman and equity owner of Scottish American Insurance, a nationwide E&S wholesale brokerage placing nearly $250 million premium annually. Neal also advises retail/wholesale insurance distributors since his 2014 retirement from Wells Fargo, where he headed the firm’s Insurance operations. Throughout his career, he has been a passionate advocate for protecting individuals, families and their businesses, recently completing his term as president of the American Bankers Insurance Association in Washington, D.C.

Neal joined Wells Fargo Insurance in 2005 and oversaw the development of its full-service, nationwide insurance sales centers as well as rapidly grew its direct-to-consumer and lending-related insurance businesses for eight years. From 2009 to 2011, Neal was also president & CEO of the firm’s commercial insurance arm, Wells Fargo Insurance Services (WFIS), presiding over integration of Wachovia Insurance and the combined enterprise’s growth to fifth-largest insurance brokerage worldwide. WFIS provides financial and consulting services plus a wide range of insurance products including comprehensive commercial risk protection, benefits, program administration, and international coverage.

Before joining Wells Fargo, Neal headed the American Medical Association’s (AMA’s) insurance agency, providing financial services to physicians and their practices across the United States and forwarding AMA’s agenda on health insurance policy. Prior to that, Neal spent 15 years with Avco Financial Services. As president & CEO of Avco’s worldwide insurance operations, he drove profitable growth of ten companies operating in nine countries including Balboa Life & Casualty, a premier provider of lending-related and specialty consumer insurance to U.S. financial institutions and their customers.

Neal started his career in 1981 with E.F. Hutton Group, Inc., where he focused on the firm’s diversification in financial services. He led marketing and sales force activities for Hutton Financial Services, an alternative distribution network of retail offices, and Hutton Life, the progenitor of universal life insurance.

Neal earned his B.S. degree in business administration from Villanova University in Pennsylvania, and his M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Mass.

Neal and his family reside in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Both he and his wife, Doreen, are active leaders in community organizations focused on child welfare, positive parenting and preventing neglect/abuse.
